Banffy Haus German Shepherds
My name is Dr. Peter L. Banfe. We at Banffy Haus take the experience of the first 8 weeks of a puppy's life as a CRITICAL determinant of a puppy's FUTURE.
We are fortunate to have homeschooled our children. Also, we only do about 4 litters a year. This affords us the luxury of spending more time with the puppies and carefully monitoring progress. We have two whelping areas. In addition we have a portable monitor so that, even though they are very close to us, we can monitor them at all times.
Our goals for the puppies are threefold:
1. To develop the puppy's mind: By stimulating their senses. For example, all day we subject them to complex patterns such as found in classical music. We pet them, subject them human voices, vaccuums, loud metalic sounds, singing, wood blocks, yelling, etc.
2. To develop their temperaments: We place them on their back to starting subordination to the human owner. We lift them high in the air to develop their confidence in themselves. If we get a puppy with a strong dominant attitude, we will start petting the top of their head, and will continue until they accept that stimulus. Then we expose them to prey stimulation to develop and monitor prey drive which will be used to train the pups as they grow. We groom them, cut their nails, to prepare the ground for their new owners.
3. Cleanliness and crate sensitivity: We use a fresh cotton fiber sheet backed by plastic each day. It is quite expensive, but keeps things very clean. When mom no longer cleans up, they go into cedar chips, and the feces cleaned out often. A clean living space tends to develop clean puppies. They are put into crates probably twice a week and then back into their whelping area. This prepares them for crate training.
We care alot about these pups. The top whelping area has an air filtration system and is heated. In addition the pups have heating pads heated to about 98 degrees to take the chill off when they are very young.
We log the behavior of each individual pup in a log book. My daughter Aniko is absolutely wonderful with the pups, sings to them, and applies the elements of our method. Each puppy is treated individually and programs are modified to fit the individual puppy.
It is with humility that I even coin the term "Banffy Method", as the approach and techniques which comprise our method are largely drawn from other very expert sources and empirical applications by other more experienced people. But, I believe our approach is more rigorous than many if not most breeders.
THE RESULTS
Our puppies melt into your arms, run to the front of the kennel to people, don't cringe when they hear noise, and have a head start in terms of sensitivity and mental and emotional development and development of the traits characteristic of the German Shepherd breed. They begin their new lives prepared for the human experience, confident, well-adjusted, stable and people friendly.
This experience during these first eight weeks will affect their entire life. Improper development, inadeaquate attention can have tragic consequences for the life of these young pups, forever.
